Just do it (your way)

Posted over 1 year ago

I run. Well I try to run. I sometimes run days in a row, and sometimes I stop running for weeks. To avoid stopping I sometimes plan my runs in advance. I try to structure it. It does not help. I still stop for weeks. I guess regular running is not really a part of my life style. But still I run. But not as often as I would like. And not as regularly as I would like.

I run. Well I run but not as fast as most. I wish I could run faster. I sometimes get passed by much older men and young women. I hate that. I wish I could run faster. But still I run. I am like a Diesel engine though. I can go on and on with running. Not as fast as I would like, and not as regular as I would like. But I always start running again after a dry spell. I don’t give up running. In that way I am a regular runner.

I guess this may sound familiar for all of you doing business performance management. You do not do it regularly, you would like to do it better, you sometimes stop but you always start again.

My wife, who is into Zen, would say that it is not yet really part of you. You should accept that it is not, instead of fighting it. I think Nike says it best: Just do it! It does not matter how, at what level, or how often, but just do it.

Erik – there is an american horse trainer (well actually more a people trainer ;) ) who also does martial arts. He talks about how you are only working with horses a minority of time so you need to “practice” in the rest of the time. I can’t remember the exact quote but it is about “being the horseman you want to be” but in everything you do.

So the “just do it” is about more than just doing it in KPI, or running, or…. its about just doing it in everything.

The more I try that, the more I find it is the same everywhere. Just a different aspect of the same thing.

(the trainer is Mark Rashid)
